Western travel views [graphic]. ca. 1885-ca. 1900.

Photographs show Colorado scenery, general views of Colorado towns, and railroads. Utah views focus on Salt Lake City and show the Mormon Tabernacle and general views. California views include many from San Francisco: some from the California Mid-Winter Exposition, views of Chinatown (including an opium den), etc. Other California views show the Hotel del Monte in Monterey and Yosemite National Park. Photographs also show views of the Columbia River Gorge, Minneapolis, logging in Wisconsin, street scenes in Chicago, and other views across the nation.

C. W. J. Johnson arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business. Morris Badt was born in Schwersenz, Posen, Germany in 1830. He emigrated to New York in 1847 and moved to San Francsico in 1851, where he established a mercantile business. He later established businesses in Elko and Wells, Nevada. He married Lena Posener in 1868. Badt died in San Francisco in 1899. Mirel Lipshuetz Badt was the stepmother of Morris Badt.
